BRITAIN'S new drugs czar has claimed that cannabis can make dub reggae enjoyable for white people.

Professor Les Iversen said the drug should be legalised if only to help middle-class caucasians get the most out of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, King Tubby and I-Roy.

He added: "I'm just saying that, objectively speaking, most white people find it difficult to elevate their understanding of reggae beyond One Love and maybe a spot of Aswad.
"Yes, they may be aware of Burning Spear, but they won't have actually heard him. They're not naturally receptive to dub in the same way a labrador has no natural affinity with grapefruit.
"But the consumption of cannabis, even poor quality 'soap bar' with bits of clear plastic in, turns those initially mystifying layers of reverb and delay into a goose-down musical mattress on which white people will luxuriate for hours and hours as they drift ever deeper into a warm, profound meditation which will leave them feeling genuinely touched by the hand of Jah.
"I would imagine."
But Conservative backbencher Julian Cook said: "I like a bit of UB40 in the car on a nice day, and I also quite liked that one by Chaka Demus and Pliers, but that's absolutely as far as I, or anyone else, needs to go in terms of bass-heavy music.
"I certainly wouldn't want my son or daughter listening to hours of similar-sounding instrumentals with names like 'Version 4' while they nod their head like a well-toasted Churchill insurance dog."
He added: "Would someone please tell me what's wrong with a nice glass of sherry?"

Buddy Holly (1936-1959) was one of the founders of rock & roll, and his influence is vast... Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas, and grew up in the Tabernacle Baptist Church, a fundamental Baptist congregation.
His father and older brothers served in various capacities at Tabernacle. Buddy made a public profession of faith in Christ and was baptized at age 14, but his life did not exhibit good evidence of regeneration... Buddy Holly professed Christ, but he never lived for Christ. Sadly, he was far more interested in rocking and rolling than in glorifying Jesus Christ. Buddy Holly's biographer notes: "He became sexually adventurous, a moral outlaw in his time. . ." (Ellis Amburn, Buddy Holly, p. 4).
In his teens, Buddy began disobeying his Christian parents, staying out late, drinking, smoking, shoplifting, gambling, carousing with immoral women. Buddy's friend Sonny Curtis remembers him as "a drinker--loud, a smart aleck, head-strong." Even after publicly professing Christ and being baptized, Buddy told his friends that he had no intention to stop his sinful ways. From time to time, Buddy expressed some remorse for his wicked life...
Buddy's older brother, Larry, who is still a member and a trustee at Tabernacle Baptist, believes Buddy was saved but backslidden and the Lord took him home because of his stubborn rebellion (Amburn, p. 54)...
The late Pastor Ben Johnson, who baptized Buddy, testified to E.L. Bynum, the current pastor of Tabernacle, that not long before he died, Buddy told him that he intended to get out of the rock & roll business after he made enough to get out of debt. (This was related to me in a telephone conversation with Pastor Bynum, August 9, 2000).
Instead of getting right with the Lord and obeying the Bible, though, Buddy pursued his self-willed course and was destroyed in his youth... instead of shining the light of God's holiness into this fallen, needy world through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Buddy Holly used his music and lifestyle to promote moral license and to help create the debauched rock & roll society. ...... read more>>>

keep saying it’s time Jackie Leven released a live ‘Best Of’ but, as he has explained, if he does that, he doesn’t get to release any new music for another year or so. Somehow he has persuaded his label to let him put out a series of retrospectives and that’ll serve. You see, production often dates a studio album and every album has songs that reveal their strengths or flaws later on, in performance. Here we get the songs that have endured, in simple arrangements that show off Jackie’s remarkable guitar expressions and rich voice.There used to be a fan club, called The Haunted Valley (named after a lyric, of course), that had an annual CD, usually cribbed from a live show or shows. It fizzled out, not for want of demand, but mostly disorganisation and lack of time. This double CD is two of those releases and will be followed by 3 more sets. One of the discs is improved - I remember the original was only one single track for an hour, making song-hopping rather hard. On the other hand, some were fetching respectable amounts as rarities on Ebay and this release will knack the prices hoarders might have fetched…….First of the pair is a show from 2000 that was recorded and broadcast by a German radio station. Unusually, it features keyboards and trumpet backing from Michael Cosgrove as well as partner Deborah Greenwood on vocals on a couple of songs- her voice sets Jackie’s off well, while the keys add a lush warmth. He has an appreciative audience here for his jokes and tales between songs and hushed meditation for the strong song selection. Looking For Love is an old favourite and Universal Blue is lovely. It makes a Yorkshire forest park above Otley into a mystic tumulus. He romanticises and beautifies images into wider reaching images, as in the next song, Single Father. A yarn about Germans calling him while he’s on the loo precedes a cover of You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling. Jackie’s playing is percussive and expressive, accompanied by his constantly tapping foot acting as metronome. Jackie describes this show in the sleeve notes as good, not great and his honesty does him credit – I’d play this to a neophyte over a studio album any day. Next up is a solo show in a prison in Norway on an afternoon. A slightly nervous Jackie tries to justify himself to his captive audience before settling for winning them over with solid playing and succeeding in the end. Johnny Cash At St Quentin, it ain’t. After the title track, lifted from an early solo album, the opening of the concert proper is a show of guitar mastery with the trademark fingertap rolls on the guitar body. His opening remarks are about his drug use, prison time and how two years with a damaged voice box led to heroin addiction. The song selection is as solid as the other disc with songs like Pourtoun and Call Mother A Lonely Field, recalling the way expatriate hearts of Celts abroad turn to home and hearth. Classic Northern Diversions takes us to working men with lost lives, drinking their time away in post-industrial cities like Leeds. His rich voice and Celtic melancholy knock the wimpy modern-hippy/folk pretensions of the current crop of singer-songwriters into the gutter. The set has quality sleevenotes, giving context to the recordings and the mood of the day. There is an essay / rambling wander from Jackie about moments from his touring (he spends up to a hundred nights a year on the road) and there are more of the same available on his website. Both these discs are highlights of each gig, choosing to squeeze on just the best bits, and best bits they are. -->-->Ross McGibbon

Ernest J. Bellocq was a professional photographer who worked in New Orleans during the early 20th century.

Bellocq is best remembered for his photos of the prostitutes of Storyville, New Orleans' legalized red light district.

After his death most of his work was destroyed. However, a collection of glass negatives was later found concealed in a sofa. These were photographs of prostitutes who worked in the legalised brothels of Storyville around 1912.

2. Dusty Springfield, "I Only Want To be With You." Reminds me so much of growing up in the sixties. If she wasn't being played on vinyl she seemed to be always on the TV. A greatly underrated artist.
3. The Beach Boys, "Heroes and Villains." Amazing thumping beat and the stunning vocals… it has to be one of the most original songs of the sixties.
4. Paul Simon, "The Late Great Johnny Ace." Haunting… The death of John Lennon and a fifties pop singer and linked through dreamy music, wistful lyrics and a mellow cello.
5. Bruce Springsteen, "Independence Day." Probably the best song ever written about a father and son relationship.

Special Photograph no. 936. This picture is one of a series of around 2500 "special photographs" taken by New South Wales Police Department photographers between 1910 and 1930. These "special photographs" were mostly taken in the cells at the Central Police Station, Sydney and are, as curator Peter Doyle explains, of "men and women recently plucked from the street, often still animated by the dramas surrounding their apprehension". Doyle suggests that, compared with the subjects of prison mug shots, "the subjects of the Special Photographs seem to have been allowed - perhaps invited - to position and compose themselves for the camera as they liked. Their photographic identity thus seems constructed out of a potent alchemy of inborn disposition, personal history, learned habits and idiosyncrasies, chosen personal style (haircut, clothing, accessories) and physical characteristics."

Various spellings include Om Kalthoum, Oum Kalsoum,Umm Kolthoum. In Turkish, she is named Ümmü Gülsüm. She was an Egyptian singer, songwriter, and actress. Born in El Senbellawein,(kawkab el-sharq).singer of the 20th century and even the Egyptian Ministry of Information seems to have given either December 31, 1898 At a young age, Her father, an Imam, taught her to recite the Qur'an.she was noticed by Abol Ela Mohamed, and by the famous oudist Zakariyya Ahmad, who invited her to Cairo. She waited until 1923 before acceping the invitation. She was invited on several occasions to the house of Amin Beh Al Mahdy, who taught her how to play the Oud". Rawyeha Al Mahdi, daughter of Amin At this point in her career, she was introduced to the famous poet Ahmad Rami, French literature, which he greatly admired from his studies at the Sorbonne, Paris, and eventually became her head mentor in Arabic literature and literary analysis.she was introduced to the renowned lute virtuoso and composer Mohamed El Qasabgi. El Qasabgi introduced Umm Kulthum to the Arabic Theatre Palace, where she would experience her first real public success. she embarked upon a large tour of the Middle East, touring such cities as Damascus, Baghdad, Beirut, and Tripoli. Gamal Abdel Nasser, who would later become the president of Egypt.In addition, Umm Kulthum was a dedicated Egyptian patriot since the time of King Farouk. These performances are structure of Western opera, consisting of long vocal passages linked by shorter orchestral interludes. Enta Omri (You Are My Life) Umm Kulthum was rumored to have had a romantic affair with Sharif Sabri Pasha Umm Kulthum was diagnosed with a severe case of nephritis. She gave her last concert at the Palace of the Nile .She moved to the United States, where she benefited for some time from the advanced medical technology,upon re-entering her home country, she required hospitalization due to declining health. Umm Kulthum died in a Cairo hospital both in the Arab World and beyond. Among others, Jah Wobble has claimed her as a significant influence on his work. Bob Dylan has been quoted as saying "She's great. She really is. Really great" [3][4], Maria Callas, Jean-Paul Sartre, Marie Laforêt, Salvador Dalí, Nico, Bono and Led Zeppelin are also known to be admirers of Kulthum's music. One of her best known songs, Enta Omri, has been the basis of many reinterpretations, including one 2005 collaborative project involving Israeli and Egyptian artists. She had been referred to as "The Lady" by Charles de Gaulle Even today, she has retained a near mythical status amongst young Egyptians. She is also notably popular in Israel among Jews and Arabs alike

In another life, I was a major collector of unofficial Bob Dylan recordings, at one time having one of the better collections on the planet. Marriage and children and real-life responsibilities, as well as Dylan's constant touring since 1978 brought an end to that!In 1974, Dylan went on tour for the first time since his 1966 "motorcycle accident." He'd made only a handful of appearances during that hiatus (Isle of Wight, Concert For Bangla Desh and a couple others), so when "Tour '74" was announced, it was as big a story as anything at that time.Tickets for the shows were sold by lottery, and I recall walking to downtown Toledo to enter the lottery for tickets at the Ann Arbor show.I didn't get any.But Rolling Stone was all over it, with stories running practically every issue as the tour made its way around the country (as well as Toronto and Montreal). At one point, they made this t-shirt available as part of a re-subscription deal. I've had the shirt ever since, although I grew out of it by the time I'd gotten married. This is one of two issues of Rolling Stone that I've saved over the years, having disposed of my collection of those about ten years ago. (The other has Senator Sam Ervin Jr. of Watergate fame on the cover.)I still have most of the recordings I'd collected... many have been officially released in recent years with the Bootleg Series. At one time, I had about 85% to 90% or more of "Tour '74" in hand, all of which were audience recordings of varying degrees of quality, but good enough to get a feel for the shows. The best ones were from early on in the tour, when Dylan and The Band were still sort of working out their chops — not yet in the auto-pilot mode that is evident on the Before The Flood official recording.The magazine is the March 14, 1974 issue.
